Summary of deaths in hospital and post discharge - for diagnosis at admission or primary operation within 30, 60 and 90 days of hospital admission or procedure

Description

The NHS Information Centre links Office of National Statistics (ONS) mortality data to HES on a monthly basis. The linkage adds valuable information to HES such as deaths which occur outside hospital and cause of death which cannot be determined by using HES data alone. Additional information on the linkage process and data can be found on the Linked HES-ONS mortality data page: http://www.hesonline.nhs.uk/Ease/servlet/ContentServer?siteID=1937&categoryID=1299 The analysis presents a high level summary of seasonal trends in deaths of patients both in and outside of hospital within 30, 60 or 90 days of admission/ procedure. It is important to note that this high level analysis can't be used to infer that the admission/procedure caused the patient's death. Further, the analysis is carried out at episode not patient level, so a patient and the associated death could be counted more than once if they have had more than one episode. It is based on annual refresh HES inpatient data for 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and provisional monthly HES inpatient data for April 2010 to September 2010 covering patients who have been treated in NHS Hospitals in England or in the Independent sector in England commissioned by English NHS. The inpatient data is linked to provisional mortality data covering deaths from January 1998 up until November 2010.
