It covers five years data from Mental Health Minimum Dataset (MHMDS) with the most recent information being for 2009/10. The publication is accompanied by the largest ever release of NHS mental health service activity data, in accordance with the Government's public data agenda. Further information about data quality was added to the National Reference Tables, Organisation level data tables and the MHMDS Statistics: Data Quality and Methodology document on 4 February 2011.

This annual report primarily presents information on NHS community contraceptive clinics (family planning clinics and clinics run by voluntary organisations such as Brook Advisory Centres). This has been collected since 1988/89 through the KT31 return. Information on NHS community contraceptive clinics excludes services provided in out-patient clinics and those provided by General Practitioners. However, limited data is presented for out-patient clinics sourced from the Health and Social Care Information Centre's (HSC IC) Hospital Episode Statistics (HES), prescription data from the Prescribing team at the NHS IC, and survey data from ‘Contraception and Sexual Health 2008/09', a report published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on behalf of the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC). A new quarterly attendance level collection known as Sexual and Reproductive Health Activity Dataset (SRHAD) started in 2010/11 and it is currently running alongside the KT31 return. For this year's publication we received data from 171 organisations. 92 of these submitted full year data via KT31, 50 submitted full data via SRHAD, and 22 organisations migrated to SRHAD part way through the year. The remaining 7 organisations submitted SRHAD part year because their services were transferred either to or from another organisation. Even though the data are collected on a completely different basis (see data quality statement), the mapping and subsequent analysis of the SRHAD data are considered to make them comparable to the KT31 data. There are some data that are not available via SRHAD and these do have an effect on the figures presented (including the totals) but these are considered to have a minimal effect on the figures. October 2012 note It has been identified that some of the data received in relation to the NHS Contraception Services: England publication series have been under-reported from 2006/07 to 2010/11 due to a coding error. Nationally this has resulted in first attendances being under-reported by approximately 5 per cent for each of the affected years. The error has been corrected nationally for the 2011/12 publication. Previous publications have not been amended. Please see the errata note for further information. The HSCIC apologises for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Note: Following assessment by the United Kingdom Statistics Authority the statistics in NHS Contraceptive Services: England publications were recommended to continue designation as National Statistics subject to a number of requirements being met. As part of satisfying these requirements, an updated Data Quality Statement has been issued on 2 April 2012. The revisions include a new ‘Relevance' section, further detail on the coverage of the data and how the data are returned, and clarification that many of the initial problems as organisations implemented the SRHAD data collection were resolved before final data were submitted, therefore limiting any affect on the data. In 2013 the government will begin its move towards releasing records when they are 20 years old, instead of 30. The introduction of a 20-year rule is a key part of the government's transparency agenda and The National Archives is helping to manage the earlier release of the public record. In September 2012, 80 government bodies that transfer records to The National Archives provided data on the volume and transfer status of the records they hold that date from up to 1984. The transition to a 20-year rule will take place over ten years and this type of data will be collected throughout that time and published on our website. Note: Following publication of this report on 28 September 2011, revised Hepatitis B data was received from 6 PCTs. The main PDF report and the Hepatitis B tables files were updated on 2 December 2011. Blank values were originally published in Table 12a of NHS Immunisation Statistics, England, 2010-11 for Hertfordshire PCT. This was previously updated in a correction on 25 October 2011 in the report, excel and CSV tables. No other tables or PCTs were affected. The information in this bulletin, about immunisation statistics in England, comes from: The Health Protection Agency (HPA) and Health Protection Services (HPS) - for information on childhood immunisation coverage at ages 1, 2 and 5. It is collected through the Cover of Vaccination Evaluated Rapidly (COVER) data collection for PCTs. The NHS Information Centre (The NHS IC) - for information about the BCG programme and reinforcing doses of diphtheria, tetanus and polio on the KC50 return from known providers of immunisation services. The Department of Health - for information on persons aged 65 and over immunised against seasonal flu for all PCTs (in conjunction with Health Protection Agency).

This bulletin presents the latest information on uses of the Mental Health Act 1983 ("The Act") in England (excluding guardianship under Sections 7 and 37) between 1 April 2011 and 31 March 2012 ("2011/12"). Data were collected via the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) online Omnibus KP90 collection from all organisations in England which provide Mental Health Services and make use of the Mental Health Act 1983 legislation, as amended by the Mental Health Act 2007, and other legislation. This includes high security psychiatric hospitals as well as other NHS service providers and independent hospitals. These statistics are important in monitoring uses of The Act and will be of interest to mental health professionals as well as service users, their families and representative organisations. Significant improvements to these statistics have been made in response to user feedback received during a public consultation on this publication held in early 2012. Changes include refinements to measures and terminology, redesigned reference tables and new analysis derived from the Mental Health Minimum Dataset (MHMDS) and police custody databases. The latest data for 2011/12 suggest that the number of people subject to detention under the Mental Health Act continues to rise. There is increasing use of Community Treatment Orders (CTOs) with nearly half ending with the reinstatement of the underlying detention Section.
