Business plan indicators are initial management information to provide an indication of HMRC's performance, and are therefore subject to revision and audit. Final performance figures will be made available when the annual audited accounts and departmental report are published. The quarterly data summary (QDS) is designed to fit on a single page to provide a quarterly snapshot on how each department is spending its budget, the results it has achieved and how it is deploying its workforce. Before using this data people should ensure they take full note of the caveats noted in the measurement annex and treat it with necessary caution. At the moment, people should not be using this QDS data to make direct comparisons between departments for several reasons. Firstly, the business of each department is unique and it does not make sense to compare some measures across all departments. Secondly, many of the measures are not directly comparable because they do not have common definitions, time periods, or data collection processes. UPDATE : From Q1 2013/14, the Cabinet Office now publish this QDS data on the Government Interrogation Spending Tool (GIST) website http://www.gist.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/.

These code standards form part of the NHS data standards. The HSCIC is also responsible for the day-to-day operation of the ODS and for its overall development. Data for General Medical Practices, General Medical Practitioners, Prescribing Cost Centres and Dispensaries are supplied by the NHS Prescription Services and are used to facilitate their remit to remunerate dispensing contractors and provide the NHS with financial, prescribing and drug information. Users need to be aware of a number of characteristics of the data: • The GP practices file contains all prescribing cost centres as opposed to solely GP practices. Those that offer Out of Hours services, operate as Walk-In Centres or are situated within a prison are identified with a type code in field 26 • GPs may have more than one identifier within the file – one for each practice they prescribe from. Note that the practice code is supplied in field 15 of the practitioner file. • Some codes do not identify a real individual, but exist to track prescribing activity of GPs working temporarily; i.e. a ‘bucket’ code assigned to a practice, for ad-hoc use by locums. Some key consequences include: • The codes are not unique identifiers for GPs. They are more accurately described as identifying prescribing cost centres, and their relationship with a location (GP practice). • The data does not provide an accurate depiction of the number of GPs practicing within the UK. Further information relating to the contents and usage of each file can be found on the further information link, or from systems.hscic.gov.uk/data/ods.

This monthly statistical release makes available the most recent Mental Health Minimum Dataset (MHMDS) data from April 2013 onwards. Further analysis to support currencies and payment in adult and older people's mental health services was added to the publication of April 2014 final data. These changes are described in the Methodological Change paper referenced below. As well as providing timely data, it presents a wide range of information about care given to users of NHS-funded, secondary mental health services for adults and older people ('secondary mental health services') in England. The release comprises: an executive summary which presents some national-level time series information; a monthly data file which presents 56 measures by provider/Clinical Commissioning Group pairings from the most recent month's final data; a set of provider level data quality measures (also presented for provisional data for the month ahead); a background data quality report to help users assess the quality of specific information; a detailed metadata file, which provides contextual information for each measure, including a full description, current uses, and the method used for analysis. This information will be of particular interest to organisations involved in giving secondary mental health care to adults and older people, as it presents timely information to support discussions between providers and commissioners of services. The MHMDS Monthly Report now includes the ten nationally recommended quality and outcome indicators to support the implementation of currencies and payment in mental health. For patients, researchers, agencies and the wider public it aims to provide up to date information about the numbers of people using services, spending time in psychiatric hospitals and subject to the Mental Health Act (MHA). Some of these measures are currently experimental analysis.
