Making clinical audit data transparent In his transparency and open data letter to cabinet ministers on 7 July 2011, the prime minister made a commitment to make clinical audit data available from the national audits within the National Clinical Audit and Patient Outcomes Programme. What information is being made available? Percentage of children and young people with diabetes who are receiving all of the 9 key processes of care for diabetes, by participating paediatric unit. Percentage of children and young people with diabetes who have had their Hb1Ac checked and recorded, by participating paediatric unit. Percentage of children and young people with diabetes against number of episodes of diabetic ketoacidosis, by participating paediatric unit. Paediatric units are identified by name and their national code. These data do not list data about individual patients nor does it contain any patient identifiable data. Using and interpreting the data The data are based on voluntary submissions from specialist paediatric units caring for children and young people with diabetes in England. Records in paediatric units are still predominantly paper-based making data collection difficult and often incomplete. Due to the limitations paediatric units face when trying to submit complete data sets to the audit, care should be taken with the interpretation of care process data. Low results are very likely due to the absence of data rather than an indicator of practice. Stratification of paediatric audit data may lead to some results being based on a small number of patients. Care must be taken when assessing the significance of these results. For complications, the data submitted to the NDA from paediatric units is linked to data from the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES). Comparison against the DKA data allows the accurate assessment of DKA rates in children and young people with diabetes. Data from children and young people diagnosed with diabetes within the audit year have been excluded because paediatric units cannot influence the prevention of DKA at diagnosis. Accessing the data For subsequent years data from the Paediatric National Diabetes Audit will be made available by the Royal College of Paediatric and Child Health (RCPCH) in CSV format. What does the data cover? The data measure levels of completeness for data submitted to the Paediatric National Diabetes Audit and measures of performance in the audit at trust level for key performance measures for assessing standards of care for diabetes in paediatric units. Details of these standards and further information on the audit can be found in the National Diabetes Paediatric Audit Report 2009-2010 , available from the diabetes audits download page. Are all paediatric units included? All paediatric units in England that manage children and young people diagnosed with diabetes are eligible to submit data. However not all units submit data due to the limitations outlined above. What period does the data cover? These data were submitted from participating paediatric units between September and November 2010. These data pertain to the care provided to children and young people with diabetes in participating paediatric units from 1 January 2009 up to 31 March 2010.

Description
For the 2010-11 financial year, Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) has collected over 17 million records detailing episodes of admitted patient care delivered by NHS hospitals in England. Of these, 17 million records are details of each delivery which takes place in an NHS hospital. This is the thirteenth bulletin that has been published on this subject. It covers the period from April 2010 to March 2011 and draws on over 668,000 detailed records of deliveries in NHS hospitals. What data is covered in this publication? 33 tables and 3 graphs are available in one excel workbook which includes data on the following; Place of delivery Person conducting delivery Anaesthetics Method of onset and method of delivery Episiotomy Antenatal/postnatal stay Complications Gestation Birth weight Miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy Provider level analysis, 2010-11 The purpose of the provider level analysis is to contribute to the improvement of both the quality and coverage of maternity data submitted to HES. It is hoped this will stimulate discussion and ultimately contribute to enhancements in patient care. The provider level analysis provides information at national, strategic health authority, hospital provider and site level (where submitted) relating to: Gestation period in weeks at first antenatal assessment date Gestation length at delivery Method of onset of labour Method of delivery Person conducting delivery Place of delivery Selected maternity statistics Spontaneous deliveries with episiotomy Caesarean with postnatal stay 0-3 days Total caesarean with anaesthetics Unassisted deliveries.
